Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion is a procedure done by a licensed esthetician in which the top layer of skin is smoothed off to reveal the softer, younger-looking skin underneath. Safe for all skin types and colors, microdermabrasion can improve skin tone and texture and reduce superficial wrinkles and discolorations for a more youthful look. Men can benefit from microdermabrasion too as it can help soften the tough facial skin found on most males, and can reduce ingrown hairs on the face and neck, making shaving faster, easier, closer and less irritating. A beard is not a hindrance to microdermabrasion, as that area can be left out of the process.
Removal of the first layer of skin enables skin products to be absorbed and utilized better by the underlying layers. Moisturizers and medications can be much more effective after a microdermabrasion. At times, the physician may recommend a microdermabrasion immediately before a chemical peel to increase the effectiveness of the peel. While a microdermabrasion feels great and usually produces an immediate improvement in appearance, the effects are maximized with a series over several months, then with periodic re-treatments on a regular basis.
Microdermabrasion involves no down time! There will be some mild pinkness afterwards, which typically takes about twenty-four hours to resolve. Extra attention should be paid to sun exposure protection for the few days following a microdermabrasion.
